2020 SINGLE BLOCK D PINOT NOIR

$95.00 inc GST

Planted between 1995 and ‘98, the D block comprises 8 acres of vines on the vineyard’s south facing slope. Facing away from the sun means this site is slightly cooler than the North Slope. The soils consist of dark brown volcanic clay-loams at the top, to black clay-loams towards the bottom. 1 acre of Sauvignon Blanc, a much cooler climate varietal, is planted on its most westerly end between 1995 and ‘96. This provides all the fruit for our Estate Sauvignon Blanc and much beloved barrel-fermented Fume Blanc.
The rest of the ridge, nearly 4.5 acres, is planted with Pinot Noir. There are three clones of Pinot Noir in this block: G5V15, MV6, and 114 – a clone from Burgundy. Vines are less densely planted here, 2.5m between rows and 1.5m between vines. This combination of cooler site and clones makes for wines that are deeper in colour, richer in forest fruit, body, and tannin.

Deep ruby in the glass. Rich texture with luscious acidity balancing structured, firm tannins. Forest fruits, red cherry’s, red plums with layers of toast and vanilla and cedar. Palate develops revealing earthy, leafy notes and prunes on a long, long finish.
